France becomes the first nation across the globe to ban supermarket food-waste

On 3 rd February 2016, French Senate in union passed the law that bans food stores and large supermarkets from wasting food that has approached expiration date. Another legislative chamber of France, National Assembly had also voted for the same law in 2015. With this law, France becomes the first nation across the globe to ban large stores and supermarkets from destroying or throwing away unsold food and instead forcing them to donate these food to food banks and charities. This law came into effect after the anti-poverty campaigners launched a petition against these food wastages. This campaign was led by Arash Derambarsh.

CPCB released Air Quality Indices for twenty-four Indian cities

On February 2016, the CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) published NAQI (National Air Quality Indices) for specific Indian cities. These indices were published with a specific colour code as well as a numerical value that will help in comparison of pollution levels across the cities. Determination of NAQI is based on concentration of 8 different pollutants which includes SO2 (Sulphur Dioxide), CO (Carbon Monoxide), NH3 (Ammonia), NO2 (Nitrogen Dioxide), Pb (Lead) and O3 (Ozone). NAQI is determined on the basis of concentration of eight pollutants, including sulphur dioxide (SO2), Particulate Matter (PM2.5 fine, respirable particles), carbon Monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), lead (Pb), ammonia (NH3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

Government launches Project Sunrise for improving HIV interventions across North-Eastern States

On 6 th February 2016, JP Nadda, present Union Minister (Family Welfare and Health) inaugurated the ‘Project Sunrise’ in the city of Imphal, Manipur . The objective of this project is to enhance interventions against HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infections as well AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) among individuals who use drugs such as PWID in eight different north-eastern states. The project seeks to improve quality, scale and coverage of HIV interference among PWID, their spouses and FIDU (Female Injecting Drug Users). This program is of 5 years and aims as supporting the on-going NACP (National AIDS Control Programme).

Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India inaugurates POR (Paradip Oil Refinery) in Odisha

On 7 th January 2016, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India launched the POR (Paradip Oil Refinery) in Odisha. This refinery will be the 11 th establishment of IOC (Indian Oil Corporation). PM Modi has dedicated this to the country. This refinery took 16 years to build and cost a total of Rupees 34555 crore. Its foundation stone was laid on 24 th May 2000 by AB Vajpayee, the then Prime Minister of India. While the original expected date for starting production at this refinery was in 2013. The refinery was expected to start production in the third quarter of 2013. The refinery will be able to produce premium grade fuels such as of Euro-V and Euro-IV quality.

For offence of doping, Leg-spinner Yasir Shah of Pakistan suspended by ICC

On 7 th February 2016, ICC (International Cricket Council) suspended Leg-spinner Yasir Shah of Pakistan after he was found positive for Chlortalidone, a banned drug. He is banned for 3 months. Chlortalidone is a substance used for treating high-blood pressure and is one the WADA’s prohibited category on masking agents and diuretics. It is prohibited out-of-competition as well as in-competition.  Yasir will be able to play only after March 2016.
