State of Disaster declared in Zimbabwe’s rural area

On February 5 2016, the President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, declared the rural parts of Zimbabwe in a state of disaster as the area were hit by drought. The declaration came after European Union placed the proposal of the aforesaid declaration. The declaration will allow other countries to shift the attention to Zimbabwe and help the people with food and money. Going by estimates, about 2.4 million people in Zimbabwe are in need of food. The neighbouring country, Zambia has come forward to help Zimbabwe by way of supplying maize.

Digital India sets its footstep in Colombo

On February 6 2016, Sushma Swaraj, the Minister of External Affairs in India, inaugurated Digital Indian campaign in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The inauguration took place during the Sangam Festival 2015-16. The Rise of Digital India campaign has allowed India to showcase the benefits of IT to a common man. The initiative has already allowed numerous people in India to get an access to the internet and gain the benefits which are on offer through the aid of the internet.

Sapna Devi bags gold in Wushu Taulu Competition

On February 7 2016, Sapna Devi bagged a gold medal for India in the Wushu Taulu Competition hosted in Shillong. The event took place in the 12 th South Asian Games and has more than 2500 athletes as participants. To take the first spot, Sapna had scored 9.45 points, whereas another Indian, Susmita Tamang from Nepal scored 8.72. The silver medal was awarded to Nazia Parvaiz from Pakistan. Wushu is form of exhibition which has been derived from the traditional martial art and has become an international sport. The 12 th South Asian Games will conclude on February 16 2016.

Paradiip Oil Refinery inaugurated in Odisha by PM Narendra Modi

On February 7 2016, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the 11the refinery by Indian Oil Corporation Limited which was dedicated to India and started its operation in Odisha. This inauguration has completed a 16-year old project that has been built at a cost of INR 34555 crore and was visioned by the ex-PM of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Though the refinery was expected to start its operation in the year 2013, delays have escalated the cost of this project by 2.5%. The oil refinery is well-equipped with machines that can produce premium grade outputs in the form of Euro-IV and Euro-V.

Sudhir Tailang passed away

One of the most noted cartoonist of India, Sudhir Tailiang passed away on February 6 2016, at the age of 55 years. The reason for his untimely death was a brain tumor which had been affecting him from several years. Tailang was offered a Padma Shri in 2004 for his remarkable contribution. His last contribution came in the form of a cartoon book which was titled as No, Prime Minister. The book was dedicated to the former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh. He was born in 1960 in Bikaner.
