BK Garudachar passed away
On February 26 2016, BK Garudachar passed away at the age of 99 years. He was the oldest cricketer (First-class) and had represented Mysore. His death took place in his Bangalore house. The leg-break bowler cum right-hand batsman had made 1126 runs in the 27 first class matches played in a span of 12 years (1935-1946). He was born on January 13 1917 and had initially started to play for Mysore, but moved to Bombay after the 1940s.
President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurates Muziris Heritage Project
On February 27 2016, President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated tourism project for Kerala under the name Muziris Heritage Project. The project is based with a view to conserve the heritage of Kerala and is considered as the first green project in the region. The project is very closely associated with Spice Route Initiative and has been supported by UNESCO. At the moment Kerala is tied with 41 other countries of the world through its old age trade route.
New dimension of the banking sector
The banking sector in India has been making a gradual progress. At the moment. There are 43 foreign banks, 26 public sector banks, 1589 urban cooperative, 93550 rural cooperative banks and 20 private sector banks. The banking industry of India has assets worth USD 1.8 trillion and 70% of the figure relates to the contribution of public sector. The current progress will make India as the 5th largest banking industry by 2020.
IFAD’s governing council new Chairman is Dinesh Sharma
The International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) recently selected Dinesh Sharma as its Chairman of governing council. The selection has been made for a period of 2 years. IFAD was setup in 1977 with a view to remove poverty in rural areas. India has been a key member of this initiative and a total of 176 member countries in the setup.
FIFA’s new president is Gianni Infantino
On February 26 2016, Gianni Infantino was elected the President of FIFA. The event took place in Zurich. Gianni was the ninth FIFA President to secure the place and a vote of 115 out of 207. He shall continue to hold his office until 2019. His appointment was made after Sepp Blatter stepped down from the existing position. He was occupying the seat since 1998. Other contestants in the league were Prince Ali, Jerome Champagne and Sheikh Salman.
Ranveer Singh for Dinanath Mangeshkar Award
Ranveer Singh, the Indian Actor, was selected for Dinanath Mangeshkar Award on February 26 2016. The award was established in 1999 to mark the death anniversary of Dinanath Mangeshkar, father of singer Lata Mangeshkar. The award has a monetary compensation to the winner of INR 101001 rupees along with a citation and a memento. Ranveer Singh had performed in a movie named as ‘Bajirao Mastani’. He has also received numerous appreciation for his role and managed to win the Film Fare Award for the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Male) 2015.
