Tsai Ing-wen becomes the First lady President of Taiwan

On January 16 2016, Tsai Ing-wen become the first lady President of Taiwan after she won the Presidential Election from DPP (Democratic Progressive Party). The victory made her the biggest mandate for the DPP election along with being the second candidate to win for DPP after getting split from China in 1949. Her victory came against Eric Chu from KMT (Kuomintang) Party, who has obtained 31% vote. Tsai Ing-wen won the position with a vote of 56%.

Dinesh Sharma makes it to Board of Directors for AIIB

The AIIB (Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank) elected Dinesh Sharma as a member of Board of Directors on January 17 2016. The election took place with the aid of secret ballot where Dinesh made it to the 12-member board. The event took place in Beijing and Arun Jaitley, the Finance Minister of India, occupied the seat of the Governor of AIIB. However, Dinesh Sharma represented him on the occasion. The total authorized capital of AIIB is USD 100 billion with a subscribed capital of USD 50 billion. Its core area of operations are logistics, energy, construction and transportation.

DSC Prize goes to Anuradha Roy for ‘Sleeping on Jupiter’

At the Galle Literary Festival, Anuradha Roy won the DSC prize for her novel ‘Sleeping on Jupiter’. The event was hosted in Sri Lanka on 16 January 2016 and Anuradha was awarded with the prize by the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe. The contest was between 6 authors- Raj Kamal Jha, Mirza Waheed, Akhil Sharma, Neel Mukherjee, KR Meera and Anuradha Roy. Anuradha has a career in English Literature and pursued her early education from the Presidency College and then moved to Cambridge University. She is also the co-founder of a publishing house known by the name- Permanent Black.

NITI Aayog’s Collaboration with IDFC

On January 17 2016, NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) publicized that it is working in collaboration with IDFC Bank to execute a survey of the firms involved in manufacturing business. The objective is to scan the business regulations of enterprises in every single State and Union Territory of India and address the obstacles faced by the businesses during its operations. The initiative will support the Make in India initiative by comprehending the hurdles associated with different forms of businesses.

California hosts 21 st Critic Choice Awards

The 21 st edition of Critic Choice Awards was hosted in California on January 17 2016. The event looked forward to appreciate the contributions in drama and films which were aired from June 1 2015 to December 31 2015. The nominees were selected from BFCA (Broadcast Film Critics Association) and BTJA (Broadcast Television Journalists Association. Leonardo DiCaprio was awarded the best actorfor the movie Revenant, whereas Brie Larson won the award for the best actress for Room. There were also other awards which includes best director, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best young actor, best acting ensemble and best original screenplay.
