Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill passed in Rajya Sabha

The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill has been passed in Rajya Sabha after being already passed in the Lok Sabha on May 7, 2015. The bill now awaits the consent of the President in order to be enacted as a Law. The motive of this bill is to account juveniles who are in between the ages of 16 years to 18 years (both inclusive) to seen as adults in cases of heinous offences. Additionally, for a less serious offences, the person may be apprehended once he reached the age of 21 years. The bill is a replacement for Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000.

World’s first-ever dengue vaccine approved by Philippines

On December 22 2015, Philippines became the first country who has approved the sale of Dengue Vaccine. The name of the vaccine is Dengvaxia. The approval was given by the Food and Drug Administration of Philippines because the vaccine has the potential to cure all the four types of dengue in people aged between 9 years to 45 years. On December 9, 2015, Sanofi- pharmaceutical giant of France, received the first approval from Mexico as a manufacturer of Dengvaxia.

Fisheries sector receives INR 3000 crore for integrated development

The CCEA (Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs) has given its approval for the umbrella scheme to the Fishery sector. The sanctioned amount for this development project is INR 3000 crore, which would be used over a period of 5 years. With the allocated funds, sectors such as NFDB (National Fisheries Development Board, Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture, Marine Fisheries, Institutional Arrrangement of Fisheries sector, etc., would be looked after.

DAMPE satellite launched by China

On December 17 2015, China took the initiative to launch a DAMPE (Dark Matter Particle Explorer) satellite with an objective to shed light on the mysterious dark matter. The first-ever such satellite of China was launched from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The aim of this satellite is to explore the dark matter in the universe which remain invisible and makes the maximum composition of the Universe. The satellite is nicknamed as “Wukong”, a fictional Monkey King from a classical Chinese story.

West Bengal is home to a new species of Eel- Gymnothorax Mishrai

A new species of Eel was discovered in the Digha region of West Bengal. The species has been named as Gymnothorax Mishrai and is a recent additional to the range of fauna diversity in the region. Commonly, the fish is known as Bengal Moray Eel. Some of the key characteristics of this new species are- 32.4 cm long and the body has no patterns, the species are edible and 134 vertebral bones (hence, belonging to the Gymnothorax group). The species were caught in the fish landing centre of Shankarpur, about 15 kms away from the coast of Digha. This event has created a widespread curiosity among the local residents as newspapers highlight the same.
