California hosted 73 rd AGGW (Annual Golden Globe Awards)

On 11 th January 2016, the 73 rd AGGW was hosted in the Beverly Hilton Hotel of California. During the ceremony, the best in the industry of Motion Pictures and Television are praised. The award for the best picture in Drama genre was given to ‘The Revenant’, whereas the award for the best actor was given to Lenoardo DiCaprio. There were also other appreciations such as award for the best supporting actor and actress. The best animated movie award was given to Inside Out.

World Hindi Day celebrates its 11 th year

On 10 th January 2016, the world celebrated the eleventh anniversary of World Hindi Day. On this auspicious day, the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) hosted a special ceremony where people were educated about the greatness of this language. The day is being celebrated from 2006 along with National Hindi Divas, which is usually celebrated on September 14. The objective of World Hindi Day is to enhance the awareness of Hindi language across the world and help people understand it. Hindi is the 4 th most spoken language in the world and is the mother tongue to more than 258 million people.

Ahmedabad inaugurates International Kite Festival

The Gujarat CM, Anandiben Patel inaugurated the 28 th International Kite Festival in Gujarat on 10 January 2016. The event marks the retreat of winter in India. The inauguration took place at the river bank of Sabarmati River and had participants from all across the world. The event is a five-day event where about 100 foreigners have participated. The initiative has been taken with a view to boom the kite industry in India. Presently, the current size of the industry has grown to INR 700 crore from the existing INR 100 crore in the last one decade.

Nepal makes it to Executive Board member of UNICEF

Nepal, on January 9 2016, became the executive board member of UNICEF for the period 2016-2018. The decision was taken after Nepal had recently completed the basic terms which were required to be followed and completed by a member nation of UN Economic and Social Council. This is not the first time that Nepal has become a member of UNICEF, years like 1982 – 85, 1992- 95 and 2002 – 04 are some of the instances where Nepal has served as a member of the executive board of UNICEF.

Ravindra Kalia, renowned Hindi Writer, passed away

Ravindra Kalia, one of the most noted Hindi writers, passed away on January 9, 2016. At the age of 78, he passed away in New Delhi due to liver cirrhosis. Some of his most cherished contributions were Ghalib Chutti Sharab and Nau Saal Chotti Patni. His contribution was also observed in areas such as magazines. Naya Gyanodaya is an exclusive example of the same. He was born in 1938 in Punjab and had developed the habit of writing stories from a very early age. His contributions were praised from the Government of Uttar Pradesh , Punjab and Madhya Pradesh .
