Rajendra Singh heads Indian Coast Guard
On February 25 2016, Rajendra Singh was appointed by the Union Government as the DG (Deputy General) of Indian Coast Guard. This was the first time in the history of Indian Cost Guard that a person from a non-Navy background has been appointed in the aforesaid designation. Prior to this appointment, the post was held by only those people who were a part of the Indian Navy. Rajendra Singh has replaced HCS Bisht (Vice Admiral), who now occupies the position of the Flag Officer CiN (Commanding-in-Chief).
16 No-Selfie Zones in Mumbai
Mumbai witnessed the introduction of a new law on February 25 2016, when the Mumbai Police marked 16 spots in Mumbai as a No-Selfie Zone. This step has been taken with a view to stop the number of deaths which are caused in the course of taking selfies. The spots include some attractive destinations such as Juhu Chowpatty, Bandra Bandstand and Marine Drive. The action came into implementation after it was noticed that India alone had 19 deaths while taking selfies out of the 49 deaths in 2014.
Forbes’ 30 under 30 list for Asia
On February 25 2016, Forbes released its latest version of 30 Under 30 for Asia in Singapore. The list included the name of 300 people from Asia who fall under the category of leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators. From India, there were 56 people in the list, which also included names such as Virat Kohli, Shraddha Kapoor, Kanika Tekriwal, Raghav Verma, Arunima Sinha and Saina Nehwal. The name of co-founder of OYO Rooms, Ritesh Agarwal was also present in the list.
Green Bond Pioneer Award goes to YES Bank
In an award ceremony held in the LSE (London Stock Exchange), YES Bank won a prestigious bank award named as Green Bond Pioneer Award. The award is offered to those entities who have established themselves as an emerging pioneer in a given market. YES Bank is the fifth largest private bank of India and was among the first to issue Green Infrastructure Bonds. Apart from YES Bank, there were no Indian banks who made it to the list of winners. Other banks whose contributions were recognized in the event were World Bank, Peoples Bank of China, etc.
Gay Civil Union Bill approved by Italy
On February 25 2016, Italy became one of the first countries in the world to honor unions of heterosexual couples. The motion was passed in the Senate through a vote whose result was 173-71. The bill offers same-sex couple to stay in the same residence and share the partner’s name. However, provisions for adoption of gays and similar other clauses were removed from the bill before it was passed in the house. After having passed in the Senate, the bill will now go to the Chamber of Deputies for an approval. If approved, the bill will become a law within a matter of two months. This step has made Italy as the first country in Europe to take such a step.
