MITRA App launched by Lt. Governor AK Singh for women safety

On January 28 2016, AK Singh, Puducherry’s Lt. Governor launched a new app for the safety of women under the name ‘MITRA’. The mobile application will help women to be remain safe in Puducherry as it offers an emergency SOS aid. All that the victim needs to do is press the home button on the mobile phone thrice and an automated message will be sent to the police. Presently, the app is available for smart phones only, but the scope of development will also integrate the same on other phones as well in near future.

Mirza and Hingis shine at Australian Open 2016

The team of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have won the women’s doubles title in the Australian Open 2016. The event took place in the Rod Laver Arena situated in Melbourne, where the duo defeated Lucie Hradecka & Andrea Hlavackova. The Indo-Swiss pair has taken up their third Grand Slam double after being victorious at US Open and Wimbledon. The final score of the match was settled at 7-6 (1) and 6-3.

MP bans polythene from January 2017

On January 27 2016, the Government of Madhya Pradesh, under CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan declared that use of polythene will be banned in Madhya Pradesh from January 2017. The decision is a part of UDEH (Urban Development and Environment and Housing) Department in Bhopal. Locations such as Maheshwar, Orchha, Amarkantak, Pachmarhi, Ujjain and Omkareshwar will face a similar ban on polythene from September 2016. Additionally, a new plan for development of green energy field for Indore and Bhopal is also in the pipeline.

20 smart cities from 11 states announced by UG

On January 28 2016, the Union Government of India announced the first batch of 20 smart cities from 11 states of India. The announcement was made under Smart Cities Mission, where a total of 97 towns and cities of India were competing. Rank 1 went to Bhubaneswar, Orrisa, whereas Rank 2 and 3 went to Pune and Jaipur.

The new Lokayukta of UP is Justice Sanjay Mishra

On January 28 2016, Justice Sanjay Mishra was appointed as the new Lokayukta of Uttar Pradesh and the same was approved by the Supreme Court. In December 2015, Justice Vijendra Singh was appointed for the post of Lokayukta, but with objections the same then given to Justice Sanjay Mishra. The changes were brought in under Article 142 of the Constitution of India.

National Rowing Championship won by Santosh Kadale and Navneet Kaur

The National Rowing Championship was held in Hussasinsagar Lake in Hyderabad on January 28 2016, where Navneet Kaur emerged victorious with two gold medals. Navneet completed 2000mts Open Single Scull in 8:26:83 to seal his position as the winner and later on, in partnership with Harpreet Kaur, won the women’s double sculls in 7:42:94. In the men’s section, Santosh Kadle won his maiden gold medal on NRC (National Rowing Championship).
